Benefits of Stipple Removal

Stipple ceilings also known as popcorn or acoustic ceilings were popular in the 1950’s as a cost effective way to hide imperfections such as tape and joints in the drywall as well as damping sounds and echoes.  In the pre 1980’s this texture was made with white asbestos fibers.  This is what makes the removal hazardous and best left to a professional.  You should always have your stipple checked before removal.  This texture is still applied today but made with tiny particles of vermiculite or polystyrene and paper.

Difficult to repair

Repairing stipple ceilings can be quite a task. You have to scrape down the the damaged areas, skim coat, retexture, prime and paint. Although you can match the texture quite close you will always be left with inconsistencies. If you are looking for a flawless repair you may have to retexture the ceiling from scratch.

Keeping clean

Due to the texture of stipple it collects a lot of dust and spider webs.  It’s literally impossible to clean without rubbing it off, creating a flat spot and risking the chance of making asbestos particles airborne.

Painting

As stipple ages and dries out it turns grey.  Painting is not always a fun task as the texture makes the paint splatter.  You also risk the chance of the stipple cracking and coming off the ceiling leaving you with a repair.

Modern

Increase the value of your home.  Having your ceiling skimmed flat will give your house an updated modern look.  Nothing dates a house more than stipple.  Having a flat ceiling will also brighten up the room as the ceiling will reflect light much better than before.
