You may not be all that familiar with your attic, as it’s not typically the room where you’re going to spend all that much time (being perhaps more a place where you store things than anything else.

Despite this being the case, it’s important to make time on occasion to update the look of the walls — even though they won’t be so much appreciated as it were, you can’t just leave the walls of your attic to languish endlessly until they look like the walls of a horror house.

In painting an attic, you will find that making sure you do a good job in painting will end up with a paint job that will not have to be repeated only a few short years later.

Let’s now look at and consider five attic painting tips in Ottawa, Ontario

1. Choose The Right Time Of Year To Paint

One thing you should bear in mind is that you should choose the right time of the year for you to paint your attic, meaning that it’s not always going to be the best time of the year to do so.

Because it’s the attic being painted, it may not come as too much of a surprise that it will be colder there during the winter months and hotter during the summer months than the rest of your home.

It’s likely a good idea to paint when the room is going to be more on the warm side, but not too warm — as will be explained, it will be a good idea to open up the windows during the painting process and so you won’t want to get quite cold because you needed to do so.

At the same time, you won’t want to paint during the warmer summer months as if you do so you will find that either the paint will dry too quickly (and that is not a good thing) or you will need to turn on the air conditioner, meaning you won’t be able to open the windows… and as will be explained next this too is a bad thing.

2. Ventilate Well

On the topic of windows, you will absolutely have to have at least one of your windows open during the painting process.

Even though you may well be using paint that emits little to no volatile organic compounds, you nevertheless should have some kind of ventilation going on while you are painting.

The trick to doing this is to have at least one door open (even if this is the door in the floor to access the attic) as well as a window or two if possible.

By doing this you will get the fumes and the other strong smells from the painting process out of the room so you won’t be sitting (or rather standing) in them steeping while you are painting, and they will not linger around in the room for too long.

3. Color Considerations

It’s important to think carefully about what color or colors you are going to be painting your walls in your attic.

Though it is quite true that (as mentioned above) you aren’t going to be spending all that much time in the attic, you still should have a nice looking attic for when you do go up there,

Of course, what a good looking attic means is going to be entirely different depending on who you ask and the person whose opinion matters most here is yours as it is going to be your attic that will be painted.

4. Clean Well

When you’re painting the walls of your attic you may think that it’s perfectly okay to start off with even dirty walls as you ultimately are going to be painting them but this is not the case at all.

Rather, you are going to have to fully clean the walls of the attic — and depending on how long it has been since you last painted or even cleaned there could be quite a lot of dirt or grime on the walls — because if you do not do so you will just end up with dirty walls with paint on them.

5. Plan The Painting Project In Advance

Lastly, remember that when you plan out your painting project well in advance, you are going to do well for yourself for a number of reasons.

For one, you will get better deals on your painting supplies as well as the paint and primer that you use because you won’t be rushing out to get them at the last minute (and so you won’t just buy whatever is available to you at the time you need or want it.)

Secondly, planning out the project in advance ensures that you will not overspend on paint in that you will be first seeing how much there is to paint before you do so and so you will be able to calculate how much paint you will need.
