Wooden Fence Painting Tips in Ottawa, Ontario
If you’ve got a wooden fence, there’s a good chance that you might want to look at how it could be improved — is it painted?
If it isn’t painted, there’s always the option to paint it… and if has been painted, do you know when it was painted?
In looking to paint your wooden fence, you can do better if you follow certain key tips that will help you along the way with the process.

1. Cleaning Before You Start
One thing that’s going to be quite helpful for you as you are getting ready to paint your wooden fence is to make sure that you fully clean the surface that’s going to be painted.
Whether you’re painting the fence for the first time or if it’s just that you’re painting it as the fence has a need for a color change… or perhaps the color has faded enough to justify it, you’re going to need to clean before you do anything else.
By cleaning the surface of the fence that you’re going to be painting, you can basically make sure that painting will go better as you’ll have a smoother surface upon which to paint.
2. Properly Clean After You Sand
Speaking of smooth surfaces, you may be quite well aware of the fact that in order to get a good smooth surface, you should spend some time gently sanding your wooden fence — not so much that you whittle your fence into toothpicks, of course, just gently enough so that you have smooth surfaces.
However, any time you sand your fences, you’re going to end up with a good amount of sanding dust afterward and this sanding dust isn’t removed, you very well might end up seeing that same dust on the fence as you paint it.
Before you take up the brush for the first time, make sure that you have removed every bit of sanding dust from the fences and since this will most likely get the surface wet, you’ll have to wait for the fences to dry fully in order to then move on to the next step in the process.
3. Don’t Paint On A Bad Weather Day
Though you might think since you’re outside it shouldn’t matter too much what the weather is like so long as you get the painting done, this is not at all the case.
Indeed, though of course it’s good to have the sun out when you are painting and not rain (as this would do harm to the painting process) you don’t want it to be too hot and sunny that your paint would dry too quickly as this can actually cause some significant paint problems.
Rather, you should aim for moderate temperatures and perhaps an overcast sky, but if you see rain in the forecast you should put off painting until you have a few consecutive days without it.
4. Primer Is Key
In painting your fences, you should be aware that you need to apply a coat of primer on the fences before you apply the first of possibly a couple coats of paint.
One benefit of using primer before paint is that you will have an easier time applying that first coat of paint — paint tends to get absorbed by the wood if there is no primer there, whereas having the primer there is a good way to prevent this from happening.
Another good thing about primer is that it gets the paint to stay on the surface of your wooden fence longer.
