5 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Painter in Ottawa, Ontario
Choosing the right painter for your needs and your project requires some precautions. First, always meet the different bidders in-person to ensure not only their professionalism but also their listening and their understanding of your needs.
Then you just have to ask the right questions.
How Much Will It Cost Me?
The BIG question: the price. To avoid surprises, be sure to think of the little details.
Ask the painter to come on-site to assess the work to be done. Explain well what you have in mind.
Several factors can influence the price: number of rooms, surfaces to be painted, choice of colors, etc.
It may require extra for ceilings and walls that are difficult to access (such as at the top of a staircase).
The cost will probably be higher if you want several different colors than if you want all in white.
Some colors require more than one coat. A good painter will consider all of these details before submitting a contract proposal to you.
Does The Painter Have Insurance?
In the event of an accident, you do not want to be responsible. Your painting contractor should have insurance to protect him (and also protects you) in the event of a work accident, fire, or other damage to your property.
No one wishes for it of course, but an accident often happens so quickly and so unpredictable.
And, it can become very costly – in time and money – for you and your painter, not to mention the entire legal process for assessing liability.
The contract must, therefore, contain a liability clause and the contractor’s proof of insurance.
Ask for References
Do you want to know if the painter is experienced? Evaluate the quality of his work? Ask for references.
It is always better to do business with a company that has been recommended to us by an acquaintance who has used its services, but if not, ask questions, ask for the contact details of satisfied customers and you can go to the sources.
What Type of Paint Does He Use?
The painter is a professional. Ask him about the choice of paint appropriate to your needs: brand, type of paint (acrylic, oil, latex, etc.), finish (gloss, semi-gloss, mat, etc.), service life, resistance impact, ease of maintenance … Maybe you already know what you want?
Interviewing an expert is one way to ensure their skills, and you could learn something new. Everything evolves, even paint.
Environmental Awareness
More and more people want to make sure they reduce their environmental impact as much as possible and many companies are following suit.
Does your painter recycle paint? What about other materials and tools?
Are they biodegradable? Nowadays, there are several brands of ecological, nontoxic, biodegradable paint on the market… Get informed.
Don’t settle for just one submission. Be careful: consult three to five different painters, ask all your questions before determining the one that best suits your needs.
