Interior Painting Ottawa, Ontario: Tips and Tools When Painting High Ceilings
Painting a ceiling may seem trivial for DIY painters. However, this task requires special tools and a precise technique to pull it off correctly.
Decorating a ceiling can even become a creative and innovative activity if you are creative enough.
If you’re having trouble painting a high ceiling in Ottawa, Ontario, here are some tips and tools to make your job easier;
Tips for Painting a High Ceiling Easily
Before starting your painting, do this;
• Protect your hair: Whether short or long, cover them with a cap. As you paint a high area, a few small drops may fall into your hair.
• Protect your eyes: As you are looking up, your eyes may suffer paint splashes. While this is not necessarily dangerous, consider wearing eye protection for a more enjoyable experience.
• Cover your floor: You will prevent paint droplets from staining your floor.
• Protect your furniture: If possible, get them out of the room completely. If this is not possible, cover them with strong plastic or a waterproof blanket.
• Buy the right paint: Some types of paint are designed specifically for painting a ceiling. This is typically thicker than the paint for the walls. It will tend to cover your surface faster, depending on the color chosen. Try to prioritize ceiling paint for the best result.
Equip Yourself with The Right Tools
Painting a cathedral ceiling doesn’t require much more material than what you use to paint a wall.
However, to successfully paint a ceiling without straining your arms and neck, certain tools can make all the difference.
Telescopic Handle
This is the main tool you will need for your paint roller. Being adjustable, this type of extension handle is perfect for reducing the distance between the ceiling and you.
Scaffolding/Stepladder
The telescopic handle reaches its limits when it comes to painting something like a cathedral ceiling.
It is better to use scaffolding for the very high part. You will avoid being at arm’s length or injuring your shoulders by staying in hyperextension for too long.
Also, your roller will be more stable than when your telescopic handle is stretched to its maximum.
Don’t you have scaffolding? If your cathedral ceiling is not too high, you can still use a stepladder.
Roller
Before you get started, make sure you choose the right paint roller for your project.
You should prioritize a short nap roller (5-10mm).
To paint a ceiling, we also recommend using a roller with wire reinforcement for added strength.
Ladder
For places like the stairwell with high ceilings, you will need to use a ladder since the scaffolding cannot fit into it.
The ladder can also be used as a walkway by leaning it between a stepladder and a step, for example.
Be careful here, if possible, carry out this operation under the supervision of a second person.
Is It Possible to Paint a Ceiling Without Splashing?
With good ceiling paint and the right tools for painting a high ceiling, splashing can be minimized.
Take your time to apply the paint. Ideally, quietly roll your ceiling by making “V” or “W,” this will prevent you from having traces of rollers on your surface.
Apply thinner coats of paint as well, to avoid streaks and splashes.
