Paint Color Ideas for Your Basement in Ottawa, Ontario
A judicious choice of colors can be the perfect solution to create an atmosphere that meets your expectations.
I don’t know how you use your basement, but I know that it needs a paint update every few years or so.
In this article, we share some of the best paint color options you should consider when planning to repaint your basement in Ottawa, Ontario.
Light Colors for A Little More Light
Light colors highlight the space as well as maximize the effect of size.
Should we then completely avoid dark colors?
As it is always good to create contrasts in a room to allow its various elements to be highlighted, the inclusion of dark shades is highly recommended.
However, these should not be predominant and leave more room for bright colors. Thus, dark colors should be reserved for accents, moldings, frames, or a single wall in the room.
What Finish Should I Choose?
It seems that a matte finish would tend to absorb the natural light entering the room. In doing so, although you have chosen your colors wisely, the desired effect may not be there.
Either way, go for a velvety or satin finish.
The velvety finish is ideal for hiding small imperfections here and there, which can prove to be an advantage if you are not an experienced painter and find it impossible to make any mistakes in the process.
The satin finish, following on our recommendation to avoid matte finishes, is great for reflecting light. This is quite an advantage for a dark room, such as the basement.
Color Suggestions for Your Basement
Light Yellow
For bright, sunny settings, why not opt for a bright yellow?
If natural light is particularly modest, a canary yellow will be an effective counterweight to ensure that the room is sufficiently bright.
But not that if all of your walls are yellow, it would be better to opt for decorative elements in more neutral tones such as black, gray, or white, the latter being able to contribute favorably to the brightness of the room.
Gray
While its reputation for a dull color doesn’t make it an immediate option, a pale gray is still a top choice for the basement.
However, to contrast with this neutral color, including an accent wall in a brighter shade. Where appropriate, incorporating decorative objects (frames, vases, mirrors, etc.) in vibrant colors can be a good way to balance the decor and avoid creating a dull and overly neutral space.
White
Whether you think of white as a color or an absence of color, this is a more than ideal option for the basement.
Not only does white allow the light to reflect and diffuse, but it also allows great latitude in the choice of colors for the furniture and other objects that will help to dress the room. Like a blank page, a classic white basement opens all the doors and offers you an infinite number of possibilities for the arrangement of your room.
When purchasing your paint, note that you can choose a cool white or a warm white. What is the difference between both?
A cool white is a white tinged with blue, green, or gray, while warm white has a hint of pink, yellow, or brown.
For rooms like the basement, which generally benefit from less light, opt for a warm white.
Beige
Beige is an enveloping and relaxing color and certainly a suitable shade for a space used for relaxation purposes.
Avoid pairing it with too dark shades and consider adding with wooden items, to create a warm, comfortable decor that reflects calm.
If you’re not a fan of vibrant colors, but white seems too light, beige is an option to consider when creating your new basement decor.
